There are 18 regions according to INSEE's Official Geographic Code (COG). Since the 2016 territorial reform, metropolitan France has 13 regions, plus 5 overseas regions (Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion and Mayotte).
The region is a territorial collectivity of the French Republic, with its own powers in economic development, territorial planning, transport and vocational training. Certain overseas collectivities have a special status defined by Article 73 or 74 of the Constitution.
